How to get a Michigan marriage license

Getting a marriage license in Michigan is a pretty easy process. Details vary based on the county, but here’s the basics:

  1. Residency: There is no residency requirement to obtain a marriage license in Michigan.

  2. Age Requirements: Both partners must be at least 18 years of age to get married without parental consent. If either partner is under 18, they will need written consent from a parent or legal guardian.

  3. Identification: Both partners must present valid government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport. In addition, some counties require a birth certificate, or even a social security card.

  4. Blood Tests: Michigan does not require blood tests to obtain a marriage license.

  5. Fees: The cost of a marriage license in Michigan varies by county, but typically ranges from $20 to $30.

  6. Waiting Period: There is a three-day waiting period in Michigan before the marriage license can be used. The license is valid for 33 days from the date of issuance (this includes the three day waiting period).

  7. Officiant: The person performing the ceremony must be authorized to do so under Michigan law, such as a minister, priest, rabbi, or judge.

  8. Marriage Certificate: After the ceremony, the officiant must complete the marriage certificate and return it to the county clerk's office within 10 days. The couple can then obtain (for a fee) a certified copy of their marriage certificate from the county clerk's office.

It is a good idea to call the county clerk's office in advance to confirm their requirements and to make an appointment if necessary.

I still have questions…

Does it matter which county clerk I go to?

If you live in Michigan, go to the clerk’s office where you live. If you’re out of state, apply in the county where your wedding ceremony will take place. Your marriage license will be valid ONLY in that county, so double check :)

Do I sign my new, married name if I’m changing my last name to match my spouse’s?

Please sign your NEW last name on all three forms!

Can I fill out my marriage license online?

It depends! For Traverse City (Grand Traverse County), the answer is yes. But for Suttons Bay (Leelanau County), the answer is no. Links to both counties are included below, so just double check :)

Are witnesses required?

Yes, two witnesses that are over 18 years of age.

What if my officiant was ordained out of state, or online?

No problem!

What if I was married previously?

It depends! Bring those documents with you.

What if I’m coming in from out of state?

Non-Michigan residents who wish to marry in the state must apply for their marriage license in the county in which they plan to wed. The license will only be valid for use in that county.

I live in Michigan. Do I get the certificate in the county I live in, or the county I’m getting married in?

The county you live in.

What else do I need to know?

Find out the township the wedding ceremony is taking place in, not just the county.
